What's that smell?!?!??!?

Post by Apollo » Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:12 pm

Drove home from work tonight, stopped by the gas station, put the e brake on, as normal, and smelled a horrendous burning smell. No smoke, no smells from the other wheel wells, just from the passanger rear. I searched the net tonight, and other forums said that the rear brake, or maybe the e brake might be sticking. But would this happen on only ONE wheel? It scared the mess out of me. I just put on some new rear ceramic pads last weekend. Well, I had them put on...and the rotors turned. Any ideas on what it could be? I've kinda noticed that the e brake feels a tad different now. Kept the e brake off tonite just to be safe. ANY IDEAS??!??!?!?! Nonetheless, I still love my 500.

Our 05 Five Hundred exhibited the same problem as yours; burning smell from the right rear wheel shortly after brake repairs (new pads and turn the rotors) done by the dealer. It only occured once and dealer was unable to find any cause. Please keep us informed.

You may have a sticking brake cable or caliper.

I had the same problem when I replaced my rear pads under warranty with the "New,improved pads".

Burning smell went away in a few days. :?

if the tech did not burnish the brakes in good you will get that in ford brake
school they told us to get the veh up to at least 40mph and do a moderate
stop a good moderate stop. three or four times to burn the brakes in.hope
this helps.stan t

brake smell

Post by stan t » Tue Feb 26, 2008 5:35 am

hey apollo. stan t here you might have got a tech that flat rates a little bit
sorry guys i know thems bad words.thats A big no no in the tech world.
also get you fired seen it. the reason why i say this is when i worked for
ford they made us use silicone brake caliper grease.its a dielectric compound very costly 3oz tube is about if i remeber right is about $25.00.
i have never smelt this stuff make any kind of odor but i have always been
real careful when i put this stuff on. they make a aftermarket spray that
you spray the whole back side of the pad. i have smelt that i used a can where i work now i did not like it.it's nasty. i hope this did not happen to
you but you never know. but on the other hand i take brake work very
serious a lot people don't know that if you do a brake job and you do a
poor one that causes someone to get injured or killed and they trace it
back to the tech or mechanic that did it he/she could go to Prison.yes
prison. i am a master ford brake tech. do it right the first time you save
everbody a lot of grief and money. the reason i quite ford is no retirement
at city i got it and they match me 2 for 1 not bad.april 06 i blowed my right
shoulder out had it cut on did'nt fix it going to get cut again march 10 2008 and still work for the city good place to work. ps. apollo your next brake job that you pay for try raybestos ceramic they are high but worth it.stan t
