Wiper blade problem

Post by scaiferw » Tue Feb 08, 2011 8:45 am

I have a 2005 Ford Five Hundred, bought in November at 4 years/43k kilometres, which has a very annoying wiper blade habit. At the top of the arc, the centre of the driver side blade seems to lift off the glass, leaving dirt or standing liquid on the glass in a band about 6 inches high. This is just below my field of vision and is very annoying. For my wife, who is shorter, it could be a real problem in winter driving where a lot of dirt gets on to the windshield and it needs to be kept clean for safety.

I replaced the blades, but no change.

Does anyone have any idea what causes this or how I can fix this?

I had somewhat of a similar problem on an 06 and found that it was being caused by restriction of movement at the pivot point of the wiper arm. The restriction wasn't allowing the wiper arm to put enough pressure on the blase to keep it against the glass.

I've got a similar problem with my '05. I just ordered a case of transmission fluid and a couple of fuel filters from tituswillfordparts.com, and as long as I was paying for shipping, I threw in a left side wiper arm (about $25) to see if that would help. Maybe the spring in the wiper arm weakens a bit over time. When I get it, I'll see if it makes a difference.

There doesn't seem to be any restriction of movement, though that was a good idea to check.

With a search of these forums I find I'm not the only one with this issue, and in a snowy wet winter with lots of expressway driving it's becoming a real safety issue. My first winter with this car, so I'm concerned.

Any further ideas?

Since you just bought the car in November you may not know when the blades were last replaced. Could be they have outlived their life. I replace mine annually.

I always buy wiper blades from Ford....the parts store (after market) blades don't seem to fit properly.

That was my first thought. I replaced them with good quality blades, no change at all.

I replaced them with Michelin blades which seem to fit fine, but no improvement at all.

I bought my 05 Five Hundred in December and noticed a similar problem. I replaced the blades with Anco Profile blades and they work beautifully. So much so that I put a set on my 2010 Fusion as well.

FWIW, I got my new wiper arm and put it on a few days ago. Raining today, and the wipe pattern is back to normal. I think the spring on my left wiper arm was getting weak.

Having owned both a Freestyle for almost 4 years and my Montego for 3 years, the only blades that have worked properly are the OEM replacement blades from Ford. I buy mine either thru RockAuto or an online seller, and get them for a price similar to some of the premium aftermarket blades referenced in this thread. What I've found is that the contact points on the windshield are inconsistent with the other models, while the Ford OEM ones are consistent. The blades last about a year.

Mine are still OEM and work flawlessly and they are on a 06, never have any issues with them
