Montego tail lights on my Five Hundred (finally!)

I finally have the Montego tail lights mounted on my Five Hundred.

I would have liked to have used the amber turn signals, but had problems with the separation of brake and turn signal. So the LEDs serve both brake and turn signal (besides marker lights).

So the turn signal area is now an additional backup light.

That looks really nice. I always did like the Montego lights but didn't care for the Montego bumper.

So how hard was it to do?

Well, removing the time/money spent trying to get the amber turn signals to work and the inevitable shelving of the project for more urgent jobs. Not very difficult.

I did not cut into the OEM wiring harness OR the tail light harness. I bought another trailer lighting adapter and cut that up to create an adapter for the LED tail lights.

I had to cross the stop/turn signal over to the LEDs. The tail light wire is straight through. I replaced the amber bulb with a clear bulb and spliced the turn signal wire from the LEDs to the backup wire. Ground wire passes straight through. Then you need to splice a ballast resistor onto the brake/turn wire and the ground wire (the resistor is then in parallel with the brake/turn circuit, which does not affect the brightness of the LEDs).

Without the ballast resistor, the turn signals flash very fast (and very annoying). The resistor has to be spliced at the tail lights. The front turn signals are on a completely different circuit, so splicing a ballast resistor into the front turn signal will not work.

And the masses asked, "Why did you bother?"

Because I like the LED tail lights.

They will "grab" the attention of people more so than normal tail lights.

I also like the small chrome strips going through the lights.

Well, ya know, when I married my wife, I preferred the various body parts of several other gals.

I love my wife as she is and was. Life is about compromise, not only with other people, but also with ourselves; our desires versus our needs.

It is so funny how a thread about Montego LED tail lights morphs into a discussion about wives. :-)

I have also put them on my 05 limited as well. I'm not completely finished as of yet but they are street legal as of now. I also like them better than the stock taillights

I did get the taillights to work as they did on the Montego. I had to use an LED flasher relay to get the turn signals to flash normal but other than that I had to swap two pins on the Montego harness. I love the way it looks. I'm sure if you could get in good with a Mercury mechanic you could have the computer flashed to accept the Montego lights.

Two questions:
1. Are the 05-07 interchangeable with the 08-09?
2. With the Montego LED's, what happens if one of the LEDs burns out? Replace the entire tail light assembly?

I have 06 montego and my advice is if you got stock five hundred taillights then stick with them. If the montego led burns out they're expensive and hard to find. Average price $200 used! New $750

Did you have any luck with this? I ordered the 500 tailights, going to try to put them on the montego. Any tips?

I have looked around and havent been able to find a post, but has anyone put the 2007 five hundred taillights into a 2007 montego? The montegos 5 pin harness is throwing me off with the 4 pin harness on the 500 taillights
