Driver seat heat

Post by I'm Ralph on VMF » Wed Nov 03, 2010 4:46 pm

Hello
Been lurking and have been impressed with the knowledge traded here. Hope I can contribute in the future. At this time I have a question regarding no heat to the drivers seat, the light does not stay on, the pass. side works fine. The car is an 08 Taurus AWD that has been just about flawless til now. Of course it just turned 38,000 miles so warranty is over. Called dealer to see if there was some wiggle room and he laughed, said it's out of warranty, sorry. Thank in advance.

That sure makes me feel better about getting the ESP warranty. BTW they just fixed that on mine before I bought it.

Here is link for the extended warranty
https://www.fordesp.com/v2/Coverage-Charts.aspx

When I bought mine used it was still eligible depending on when they are built I'm not sure if they still are and I negotiated the 6 year 100,000 miles premium with my trade. I got it for the dealers cost or so he said so I'm not sure what it cost buying outright.

Thanks for the link, I'll look into it. Snooping in some other forums it seems that seat heater pads are failing in other vehicles, Taurus X, Freestyle, and Excursion to name a few. The forum members have replaced their heat elements with just a little time and parts available online for short money. Think I'll go that route after the response I got from the dealer.

I had my 08 Taurus Limited AWD for about 3 weeks and then driver's side heated seat went out. Problem described just as yours with the light not staying on. Took it back to the dealer to fix it under warranty and it was one or both of the heating element pads were inoperative.

Those seats (and heater elements) are built by Lear Corporation. Lear is famous for putting out junk (recall on Fiestas for seat design flaw, recall on Escape). Johnson Controls puts out a much better product even if it costs a little more. I actually don't understand why the OEM's don't start in-sourcing this work now that the 2-tier UAW wages are effect.

Thanks for the input. I'll try to get Johnson Controls replacements. As for replacing it sounds pretty straight forward.

Another '08 Taurus with the driver's side heating element that had the same symptoms and was replaced under warranty. You might be able to work out a deal with the dealer to put that towards an ESP since it's so much for the repair out of warranty. This way, you both win - dealer gets a high margin sale and you get you seat fixed plus coverage for anything else going wrong. Might be worth a try if the money works out.

Just hit 39,000 miles this week and the same problem. The light stays lit for less than a second and stops working. Was working on Monday and stopped working on Wednesday. Here in NJ it is less than 30 degrees F in the morning. It's nice to have.

What is it with so many people loosing their heated seats right outside of warranty?

Has anyone been able to fix this themselves? What parts did you replace and how much did it cost?

Thanks in advance,
Matthew

I paid $1400 for my Ford 6yr 100k warranty.

Call Ray Seraphin Ford in Rockville, CT. If you can get the warranty, they will sell it to you at a really good bargain. Might not get the price I paid, (my father knows the owner), but they will treat you well.

44,000 Miles and in need of yet another heated seat element!! These things are garbage, can't they replace with an alternate model that will last!?

The Drivers side is now out again for the second time... replace at 38,000 or so under warranty, and now two months and 1000 miles out of warranty and it fails yet again! These are junk and the dealer says they won't replace the problem child even though it was repaired under warranty!

Great customer service.... NOT!!

My '08 Limited came with a dead driver's heated seat, 42,000mi and no warranty. Thanks to this board I'm not overly worried about repairing it myself. I found the part at Rockauto.com, short money and pretty straightforward instructions from this board. I will probably take the seat out to do it, just have a hard time working bent over it in the car. I might get to it when it warms back up ;) Passenger side works fine, girlfriend loves it. I wish I could reach the connector so I could plug the new one in and see if all is well before I take it out. Not sure if it's the upper or lower.
My other 6 cylinder is a Valkyrie ;)

It's still $40 -$50 that I shouldn't have to spend myself... the darn thing should work at least for 100,000 miles... and this is the second time in 44,000 that the same one has failed!! That is a piss poor part if you ask me! What am I gonna get out of this replacement? Another 10,000 miles? That's crap engineering that should be rectified by replacing with a better part. The seat heater in my wife's Explorer worked until we sold it at 130,000... both seats never an issue!

Sent you a PM with the info requested.... In looking back at records, the drivers side heater was actually already replaced TWICE BEFORE under warranty! Talk about faulty parts...
