Automatic Transmission Drain Plug Location - 2008 Sable?

Post by lowdough » Sun Nov 14, 2010 1:30 pm

Hi everyone.

Anyone know where the drain plug is for the 2008 sable? My wife bought one used and now with 38,000 miles on it (35000 of them from before we bought it), I'm thinking it might be worth our while to give it a fresh dose of ATF.

Pix would be great, but descriptions are welcome, too.

Thanks in advance.

Dennis

Hi, I knew I should've took pics. It's more on the driver side and there 2 bolts you can see that stick out. I unscrewed the lower one to drain mine, not sure what the upper one is for.

Do you remember how much you filled back up with? 3, 4, 5 quarts?

I had the front on ramps and it was around 4.5 quarts that I added and that's what came out. Another member said it took 5.5 for him. I don't know if he had a lift or put it all up on jack stands so his was level so he got more out.

The bolt size is not to big, looks like 10mm if that.

I am planning to drain my wife's 2008 Taurus's tranny either tomorrow or next weekend. I bought 6 quarts of Motorcraft Mercon V.

I plan on measuring how much I drain out, one person on here said he drained 5.5 quarts out. We will see. I plan on doing this twice a year, fall and spring, every 6 months. Overkill? Maybe, maybe not.

I just drained mine this weekend and it was a snap. Only took 5 quarts to refill though. The fluid was pretty dirty so I'll be doing it again next weekend. I used Valvoline synthetic Mercon V.

Changing the trans fluid really is a snap. The drain plug is 11mm and is the lowest bolt you see when looking at the trans from underneath. I only got about 5 quarts out of mine also, but the vehicle was up on ramps, maybe if level another 1/2 quart would come out. The wife's Taurus has only 25K on it and the fluid was not bright red like new fluid. I can only imagine what it would look like after 150K which is the mileage Ford says to change the fluid.

You can do the 3 times drain and fill in succession this will give you about 90% new oil in your transmission. This is called progressive dilution. Then change it again every other oil change, eventually all the fluid will be just about fresh and new. The only cost is the fluid and your time.

I would highly recommend the 3x's trans fluid drain and fill if you never had the fluid serviced and you have more than 35K to 40K miles on the vehicle. Like I said above, the fluid was no where near the red color of new fluid. If you are a backyard mechanic the process is very simple. Just remember after each drain and fill, drive the vehicle for a few miles so the new trans fluid mixes with the old. After progressively diluting the fluid after the third fill you should be okay. You will need approximately 15 quarts of trans fluid to do this. Your looking at approximately $65 in cost of fluid if using Motorcraft Mercon V, which also is recommended. Having Ford do a complete exchange will run about $150 approximately.

My wife has and 08 Sable and wondering if the tranny has a filter or not my service manual doesn't show or say anything? All I can find out is to drain it and add fresh and check.
Any help sure would be nice.
thanks guys

I just changed my fluid one time and I plan on changing two more times my question is when should I do the next change, the next oil change or what??

My 2008 took 6 quarts of Mercon V but I also let it drain for about an hour or so.
