Speed sensor

Post by marcanddulsie » Sat Jun 21, 2014 7:32 am

We have had our 2008 Ford Taurus limited for about 3 years. It has 191000 miles on it and about 2 years ago started having an issue with the computer. Driving down the road the electronics on the dash (Speedometer, gas gauge, on board diagnostic computer stuff where odometer is) shuts down and all the lights such as the wrench and airbag light comes on. The car will drive but only a high gear such as 4th or 5th gear. It also Shift extremely hard. When I put it into reverse it sounds like the entire transmission is going fall out. same thing with drive. I have a hand held diagnostic computer and the code says speed sensor malfunction. I reset the computer and it runs fine. This happens under no certain circumstances. could be just placing it into gear or going 80 mph. We bought the car with high miles 140,000. Anyone else having this problem?

Pretty common problem, most get the sensor replaced. When the computer detects a problem with the transmission it puts itself into "limp mode".

I had mine replaced under warranty about 19k miles ago.

There is a tone ring at each wheel. The sensor reads the tone and sends power to the wheel that isnt making a sound. The computer thinks that all the other wheels are spinning but the one that doesn't have a tone has traction. You need to get this fixed because this will damage the transmission

Are these the rear wheel speed sensors? Are tere any sensors on the front, or just the rear? Thank you
