2008 Trans Stutters at 40-60 MPH

Post by byrdman51 » Mon Jan 15, 2018 2:26 pm

Have a 2008 Sable Premium with AWD (Taurus clone) and have a problem with significant stuttering at 40-60 mph. Once it reaches 60 mph it goes away. Turn off Overdrive at 40-60 mph and it goes away. Took to trans shop twice but they could do nothing since they could not replicate the stuttering and there were no codes. They told me not to turn off Overdrive since that would "damage" the trans. Why does Ford give us that capability? They changed trans oil which did not improve the problem. Made no mention of issues with trans oil. The stuttering first occurred immediately after driving thru a puddle at 50mph. Thought electronics got wet and it got better when dried out. However, stuttering still continues sporadically 2 years after this episode. This past summer we had two consecutive months with very little rain, and it seemed like the problem went away. Once we started having weekly rain showers, the sporadic stuttering resumed. My question: are there any external trans sensors that may cause this problem when they get wet or damp? Perhaps a poor connection acts up when damp or wet

We have a 2008 SABLE and was experiencing what felt like the transmision unlocking and relocking
around the same speed and went away at higher speeds.
Finally at 112,000 we had the spark plugs replaced.
BINGO. Problem solved.
Something we never expected.
I think it was $300.00 to have the plugs replaced.
It's a lot of work.
Something seemingly unrelated.
That was about 6 months ago and the problem has never returned.

It’s called a misfire. Normally misfires trigger trouble codes however I’ve seen this many times. A stutter at 40-60mph with no codes definitely can indicate a misfire. Could be a bad plug, coil, injector, etc. It has nothing to do with the transmission.
