2008 Taurus oil change intervals?

Post by opfor2 » Sun Jul 14, 2019 4:36 pm

Good day all I have a question to ask. I know what I’m going to follow but just wanted to get your thought on the matter. My 2008 Ford Taurus owner’s manual reads that the oil is to be changed every 7500 miles. However, the on-dash oil change indicator comes on at 3500 miles. So, which is correct? BTW, I do normal city and freeway driving.

Here's what the owners manual has to say about the readout:
Oil life
An oil change is required whenever indicated by the message center. USE ONLY RECOMMENDED ENGINE OILS.
To reset the oil monitoring system to 100% after each oil change [approximately 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or 6 months] perform the following:
1. Press the SETUP control to enter SYSTEM CHECK, then press SETUP control again to display “OIL LIFE = XXX% HOLD RESET = NEW”.
2. Press and hold the RESET control for 2 seconds and release. Oil life is set to 100% and “OIL LIFE SET TO 100%” is displayed.
3. While “OIL LIFE SET TO 100%” is displayed, if a lower oil life is desired, press and release the RESET control to reduce the value. Each press of the RESET control reduces the value by 10 percent.
Note: Oil life of 100% equals 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or 6 months. For example, setting oil life to 60% sets the oil life value to 4,500 miles (7,200 km) and 108 days.
The question I have is do you reset the oil life indicator on the dash at oil change time or does someone else?

I'm betting that if the monitoring system was reset to 100% at oil change time, that 6 months has elapsed so it has been triggered to give you the warning. Note it's 7,500 miles or 6 months and can be adjusted down from there.

Since you are well out of warranty, you may want to choose your own interval. For example if you use a high quality full synthetic oil you could extend that interval.

I have changed my oil with Mobil 1 every 5000 miles since day one in my 2005 Five Hundred. Just went over 327k miles...

And how would the vehicle know when 6 months is up? I'm sure it goes by mileage only.
