2010 Ford Taurus Limited Peeling Chrome on Tail Lights

Post by Wayne M » Mon Apr 22, 2013 2:23 pm

Hi
I have 2010 Ford Taurus Limited I had the taillights changed in I think it was Feb 2011 13,500 kms because of the chrome peeling off them I was told that it was because of Original supplier had a problem with this and now they were using a new supplier and that I shouldn't have this problem again.
I now have the chrome starting to peel off the tail lights again . I went to the local Ford dealer where I live and he said that Ford won't do anything about this. I said Ford is well aware of this problem of chrome peeling off the tail lights It is on almost every Ford Form where some people have had the tail lights changed 3 times. He told me that now my car is out of the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty is why they won't do anything about it. I said I have the Ford extended warranty and my car now only has 31,000 km on it this is a car that hardly gets driven as I am retired it is garage kept . So basically these tail lights are really only good for about 1 year at a time before the chrome peels off again.
I said did they really get another supplier to rectify this problem or did they just put on original stock they had left from this first supplier of these tail lights? It doesn't seem to speak well for Ford when they want people to spend I think a brand new Taurus Limited is like about $45,000 plus tax etc in Canada and they have faulty parts he said the new Taurus don't have these chrome tail lights on them I guess this is how Ford addressed the problem they did away with the chrome on the tail lights. So I guess all customers who have Ford Taurus with the chrome tail lights have to buy ones with out the chrome on them.. So if you have these taillights with the chrome on them make sure you get them changed regularly right up until your 3 year bumper to bumper warranty runs out.You think Ford would issue a recall or something on these and change them out for the tail lights that came on the Ford Taurus sel with no chrome or offer a real good deal on these parts for there customers to replace the problematic peeling chrome ones.

Hi
Yes I know been covered lots does anyone know a good Ford site that you could buy the Tail lights that were on the Ford Taurus SEL that didn't have the chrome on them this is what Ford should have done changed out the chrome ones for the ones that didn't have chrome on them problem solved. Now I have to buy these myself looking for best deal I can get on them.

I ran across this site a while back, might want to give them a shout: (right click and choose "open in new tab"; this site doesn't redirect)

<edit: bad link>

I'm sure there are others...Oh and double check this but I've heard that the "SE" model of the same year were sans chrome as well.

Luck man :)

Hi
Thanks already seen them on that site problem I am finding with most sites that carry the tail lights it is only the part that goes on the fender that they carry so there is an a and a b part one on the fender and the backup light part of it on the trunk lid.

Too bad Ford won't cut a deal on the parts and also give you some kind of credit for the defected ones with the chrome that you won't need anymore. I have noticed on some sites and auto wreckers that they are selling these tail lights with the peeling chrome and they want a fair price for them why any one would want to buy them I don't know but beware make sure you check it out first. Also I noticed that you have to know build date of car as they list a couple different ones depending on the build date.

I wonder what warranty Ford put on the replacement chrome ones when they changed them out under warranty would it have been just 1 year?

Also I am going to read over my Ford ESP extended warranty that I bought see what it does cover just in case there is a clause there about defected parts or fit and finish problems.
it is too bad that all car makers don't get it that when there is a problem and they are aware of it fix it properly I know they save money with using it is out of warranty or they don't even issue a TSB warning customers about this there are plenty of people who will be buying used 2010 ,2011,2012 Ford Taurus with these crappy peeling taillights and not even be aware of it. or many other things these car companies are well aware of but hope it will just slide past the warranty date and they won't have to pay but actually they do pay down the road with unsatisfied customers some who now decide to keep there cars a lot longer then buying a new car or switch to a competitors car. Which has happened do we already forget the bailouts many of these car companies got. It is odd when they have slogans like "Quality is Job 1." or they are striving to be the number 1 automaker or maybe just stay in business. it shouldn't be we got you today we will get the others tomorrow. I would imagine all auto makers have felt the wrath of unhappy customers but nothing changes each year they have the auto shows and roll out all these new fancy cars with big price tags and knowing many have flaws and they want to hide it or just not tell their customers about it they are all fine and friendly when they want you to sign on the dotted line when you are making the purchase of this shinny new auto but down the road there will be times like you are trying to pull teeth to get something fixed that isn't your problem or fault it is there's and they don't want to step up and do the right thing. This applies to probably all Auto makers not just Ford.
But when you are trying to be the best you should do the right thing with better products better warranty's which should be for longer periods 3 years or 60,000 km really some people reach the mileage long before they are even close to the 3 years yet your warranty is still finished.
Why not warranty the car for 5 years or at least 3 years with a higher mileage it is a lot of money the next biggest expense to buying a house but owe how fast that shinny new car depreciates actually a very bad way for us to spend our hard earned dollars? I guess in the long haul it will be a company that makes a quality product and stands behind it who will win out in the end some of the ones that don't maybe no probably won't be around anymore they will be a thing of the past just like when a hand shake or your word was good enough.

"I wonder what warranty Ford put on the replacement chrome ones when they changed them out under warranty would it have been just 1 year?"
The answer is NONE, and the Ford ESP's don't cover them either. So, in my case, I had them changed out just a month before my original factory warranty expired, and based on all the input I've read from other forum members, I fully expect the new ones to fail inside of a year. If they do, I will not buy another Ford product. I've teetered back and forth on this issue, but I've made up my mind - listen closely Ford, if they fail again, you will lose me as a customer forever. This just isn't right!

I purchased the 2010 SHO. Love the car except for the cheap detective disappointing chrome on the tail light bezels. I have been a loyal Ford customer since I was 16, but because Ford will not make this issue right I will reconsider manufacturer for my next purchase. The simple fact that the parts are defective and I have had all four pieces replaced and told the replacement parts were from another supplier but then new parts did same thing and now that my car is over age of warranty but under mileage - they want me to pay 40% of cost. I cannot believe they put such low quality parts on their high end new era launch vehicle. I take pride in my vehicle and running around with peeling chrome looks awful and embarrassing. When I purchased this car I never imagined that I would be embarrassed to drive it . NO THANKS Ford Motor Co. - I will spend my $40k elsewhere.

I think it is time we all get those grease pencils and write across the back of our cars. ( This is what you get from Ford for $35K plus) With an arrow pointing to the peeling chrome!

Hi luvins0220
Do you have something from Ford saying they wanted you to pay 40 percent that means they are willing to cover 60 percent for the replacement tail lights if your car is out of warranty?
As I am so unhappy with the peeling chrome lights I am thinking of ordering the ones that come on the Se,Sel Ford Taurus that don't have any chrome on them. And if Ford is willing to pay 60 percent of the cost that is a lot better then nothing.
Let me know who to get in touch with.

BlackBeast posted last year: "I had same issue with noise comming from front right end. It was found by Ford dealer one that engine mount was damaged. It has been replaced under waranty and all quiet now." But most folks have found the noise to come from right front strut bushing. Hope this helps.

It was a noise from the front right. The dealership replaced the axle and the power delivery unit (transfer case?). It took a Ford field rep to diagnose the problem correctly. This took 4 months to figure out. Weird about the engine mount. The car only has 28K on it. Thank goodness for extended warranties!! On to the saga of peeling tail lights...with a different dealer.

Wayne M - Here's your answer from Cato: "Problem solved! I took my 2011 Taurus in for the THIRD time due to flaking chrome. This time the dealer replaced them with the non chromed SEL lights. I had requested this the 2nd time around but I was declined after the dealer asked Ford. He offered me the 2013 lights, but I turned them down because I don't think they match my 2011. Anyway I accepted cheaper parts (chrome lights cost more), but at least I don't have to worry about having to take my car to the dealer every six months to replace tail lamps!" posted 1/26/13.

BullBill, all repairs performed at your Ford dealer come with warranty. It’s 12 months or 12,000 miles at the least.

Since Ford offered no assistance to me since I am out of the 3/36 I found a easy way to make the tail lights look better. Went to Lowes bought sandpaper and chrome colored spray paint. Sanded down the old peeling chrome and painted on new and I have to say it looks pretty good and saved several hundred dollars to buy new lights.

WOW! How creative. Looks like you removed the tailights before painting???? If the last pic is the finished product, I think it came out remarkably well. I guess only time will tell how long it will last. Thanks for sharing.

I will add another shot once I get it back on the car letting them sit over night and I figured wax them good and stay out of the car wash for a few weeks and if it doesn't last it was easy to take them off and I will slap on another coat.

Looks great! A lot of us, me included, have used Plasti-Dip to achieve a similar look. I did mine in matte black. Changes the look some, but I like it. So far it's been a year, one winter and countless car washes. Still looks perfect.
