2011 Taurus A/C shuts off while driving

Post by trghpu1994 » Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:19 pm

We have a 2011 Taurus. Have not had a problem. Yesterday we were driving and the Tire Pressure light comes on, the brake light comes on and the A/C shuts off. The rest of the display goes off as well, radio too. I am not sure how long it lasted. I was able to drive and had control over braking and acceleration. Then just as suddenly it all comes back on. The tires and brake system seem to be ok. What on earth was that? This hasn't happened before

Good Morning, lets attack these one at a time.

Tire Pressure: It could be as simple as a low tire, I am not sure what the value is but the TPMS light comes on when there is a extreme difference in the factory PSI values. Good news is it tells you that a tire is extremely low and needs to be corrected, could be a nail or screw in the tread. Bad news, it doesn't tell you which tire, you can do a visual but you have a one in four chance. A tire that low should be pretty obvious but if not sure grab a pressure gauge. When you find the suspect tire, check the tread, sidewall for glass, nails, screws or other foreign objects.

Brakes: Which system the Main brakes, (RED) or the ABS (Amber) not to insult intelligence but check parking brake to make sure it isn't on, trust me it probably wouldn't be the first time. Driving with a parking brake on should be pretty obvious.

A/C: There is a Wide Open Throttle (WOT) circuit that cuts off A/C for full throttle acceleration if it cuts out during normal cruise that is a different issue.

If the display is going in and out intermittently that is probably some sort of electrical short, and may or may not be the cause of the other warning lights.....It could be as simple as a bad ground on the panel or even the chassis ground from the battery. Have checked out immediately.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

thanks I will double check the tire. The brake light came on and off. I double checked to make sure it wasn't on and it was not. I am concerned there is a short. Thanks for the help. I really dont want to take it to the dealer. but may not have a choice. I am not an electrician

Ok here is the latest. Last week I took it to get looked at and they checked everything. The only thing they noticed was the battery cables were corroded so they cleaned them. Tires were fine. Car seemed ok so we took it to family reunion, we drove 5 hrs no problem. After leaving the hotel it did it again. One more time on saturday and 3 more times on sunday. What I noticed was the cruise worked fine ( I was using cruise control when it happened), windshield wipers, lights and turn signals as well as power windows all operated mormally. The brake system worked normally as well. It did seem to return to normal after turning the car off and back on again. We took it to the dealership and naturally it didn't act up for them. There were no system codes. They called the Ford hotline and no other dealership reported this problem. So we are going to have to bring it back when it is doing it. The only other odd thing we have noticed is at least once a day the music system will reset what we are listening to on the usb drive to "sounds from the bridge of the Enterprise". It thinks its in Star Trek I guess.

HOLY COW! I don't like the idea of driving any car around knowing that it could put you, the customer, at considerable risk in today's fast moving traffic. I think I'd be pressing to leave it at the dealership for them to assume responsibility for identifying the problem and giving you a courtesy car meanwhile. What say you?

Ok here is the latest in this problem solution. I took the car to a local workshop after 2 days thy called me and informed me that there is a small electrical cable which is one of those group of cables in side the black plastic tube near the battery which is connected to the fuse box was loose so thy changed it for me and the car now is in very good condition. as I am living in Al khobar city of Saudi Arabia they charged me 300 Saudi Riyals which is equal to 80 USD.
