Install of Front LED Complete

Post by Greg9933 » Fri Jul 12, 2013 4:14 pm

Installation of LED bulbs in the front turn signal and DRL function complete. The external resistors fixed the "fast flash" issue when the headlights are on.

If you are inclined to do this, a couple of things to consider:

LED bulbs are slightly less bright than stock 3157, but more than made up by long life and, in my opinion, the LED flash pattern

I can't speak for the V6 cars as mine is an e/b, but take the extra 2 minutes to remove the air filter box. Makes the drivers side a piece of cake and far less like that "expletive deleted" will come into play.

Consider doing it with the engine cold.

Thanks for the update. I'll probably be headed this route myself soon, assuming I ever get my hands on the equipment to enable the DRL.

Good to hear you got it squared away. Sounds like too much hassle to me. Ill just replace the standard bulb when it burns out.

Yep. Gotta agree. I think LED's are pretty cool, but if they are that important, wouldn't it just be easier to buy an Audi (who always seems to be on the leading edge of LED's)?

I actually do own an Audi - 2010 A5.

it really wasn't much work. Old bulb out, new bulb in, t-tap the resistors.

Da-dum! I'm guessing that must be how you developed your LED fetish. :)

Pulled the trigger on some stuff from SBLED's - two amber LEDs and two load resistors, shipped for under $50.

I probably should have posted this earlier - I actually took mine out last week, although your situation may be different.

Some weeks ago I posted that I had activated the DRL function on the turn signal bulbs. That was prior to the LED install. What I didn't realize or think about is that when you install the LED bulb and the load resistor, the resistor is going to function anytime the lamps are lit. In a non DRL car, no issue really. The resistors only activate during the flash of the signal. In a DRL car, however, the resistors are hot all the time, anytime the DRL's are active, which means whenever the car is out of Park. What I discovered inadvertently is that the resistors, which I knew would heat up, get HOT! I don't mean like baked bread hot, I mean like scorch your finger hot. I was concerned about heat damage over time and the resultant "no warranty" in the event of heat damage to adjacent wiring, so I ended up taking them out and reinstalling the factory bulbs.

Well, that sucks.

Trying to cancel the order now. No big deal. People are going to hate doing business with me soon. That's two orders I've canceled now in the past week!

Those arent "daytime running lights" but rather "supplemental parking lights"

I too would like to see a daytime video.

Their product actually makes it a DRL--on with ignition, switchback as well if properly configured.

That sucks. I disabled my real DRL's at the dealership because I hate them. I certainly dont want them on elsewhere. I was a fan of these lights up until that point that they function different.
