Gasoline Odor After Shutting Car Off

Post by cm63118 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 10:03 pm

My '10 SHO started having this issue three weeks ago. Immediately after shutting the car off, there is an strong immediate odor of unspent gasoline. Sometimes the odor is noticeable inside the cabin of the car, but always noticeable when you step outside from the driver's side. I can really smell it when I park in my garage. I have not noticed anything dripping from the underside either.

I had a passenger comment about it today, before we even opened the doors. The odor occurred immediately upon pressing the OFF button.

I raised the hood on several occasions in attempt to locate the source. I thought it seemed to be coming more from the area around the coolant reservoir. The odor is not constant, rather it is more like a single blast that dissipates within a minute (when outdoors) after turning off the motor.

I've already had it at the Ford service center for this once, with no result. I plan to bring it back in this week for an additional check. Has anyone else had this problem and found a resolution? Should I be concerned?

When you fill up with gas do you stop pumping as soon as the pump clicks off the first time or do you try to fill 'er up good or round it up to the next dollar?

I never top-off the fuel - when the pump stops, I let it rest for five to ten seconds and remove. Also, when this happened today, my car had been at the Ford service center all weekend, and I had 3/4 of a tank when I drove it away.

Hi cm63118,

Welcome to the forum! The gasoline smell must be unpleasant, and I know it can be frustrating when the dealer is unable to determine why it is occurring. Please send me a private message with your VIN, contact information, mileage, & servicing dealer name/state so I can help stop the smell.

Hey cm63118,

I got your PM, but received a message that your PMs are disabled, so I was unable to reply. It is perfectly fine for you to wait a week and let me know if the odor is still present. :) Have a good afternoon!

Just a quick update regarding this issue. The gasoline-like odor was present practically every day before I took the car in for servicing at the Ford dealership. They replaced a drive shaft because the boot had torn - they believed that the odor could have been coming from the damaged joint and petroleum based lubricant/grease overheating due to friction from the damage. When I picked the car up from the dealer after servicing, I immediately noticed the same odor when I got home, which is when I decided to post my question on this board.

The outside temperature dropped another 10 degrees over that weekend and has remained so since then, and I have not noticed the odor since. I can't say if the weather has anything to do with it because the car never did it during the hot month of July - it only started in August. I'm going to wait this out for a while to see if the odor returns, but as of now, it appears to be gone.

Besides that, I love this car!

I just got my 2010 Sho back from the delar yesterday after them having the car for 2 weeks having the gas smell repaired, this is the second time that i had to bring this matter to there attention the first time they could find nothing wrong with the car.
2 weeks ago i was stoped and fueling the car and thought i would open the hood as the smell was getting worse and i found that there is a part of the EVAP emmisions system that is located right nest to the firewall on the pasenger side of the car that had a oily residue on part of the device, upon getting a good whif of the residue it smelled just like the gas smell that had been driving me crazy ever since buying the car in december.
Delearship called and stated that indead that part was leaking fumes and that the mechanic deamed the car unsafe to be driving so they wanted to keep the car and order replacement parts, the new part has to have several hoses replaced as well and this took some time getting the parts rounded up and installed.
So far have drive the car about 75 miles since the repair and not even a whife of fuel smell getting back into the car or even smelling any on the outside of the car. i hope this info might help others that are having same issue.
im attaching a couple of pics of the part that was replaced, also all the hoses and lines attached to the part were replaced due to the revised part.

By now, I am sure all 2013 Taurus owners are aware there is a recall on vehicle where plastic part cracks and allows fuel to escape. Dealership gave me loaner and replaced part under warranty. No problems since.
