LED's - '13 Police Interceptor Sedan/Taurus

Post by GhostRider » Wed Oct 10, 2012 7:39 am

Has anyone installed LED's in the reverse, tail lights and front turn signals/parking lamps in a 2013+ Ford Taurus or Police Interceptor Sedan? What did you use? Any issues? Thanks!

I can't speak for the Interceptor model, but the civilian cars have LED brake / tail / and turn in the back. I have ordered LED bulbs for the front turn signal and am evaluating the ExLED module that replaces the fender trim piece near the front doors.

Not sure if you were referring to the factory issue lights or if you were meaning an added LED for law enforcment purposes.

I am talking about factory issue lights, not emergency warning lights.

I noticed the differences but the Police Interceptor Sedan doesnt have the LED surround the retail models have.

eBay has the non-interceptor lights for sale. The LED lights on the 13' Taurus run off 12volts and should replace the police tails without an issue.

I drive an interceptor on duty and a SHO off duty.

Wonder why Ford would do that? Cost issue? Electronics issue?

Don't know.

Another possible reason for this. I took a close look at my rear lamp assemblies tonight, to the point i took my old LEO streamlight (Yes, it's an old streamlight - i have proudly kept it up from my l/e days).

So, another theory here. It appears from looking closely at the 2013 LED rear cluster that there is no physical room to install the strobe head of a strobe emergency light. Maybe you could fit one into the backup light chamber, but I think with the red LED surround and the amber turn signal, you would be compromising the circuit boards for those lighting systems. It occurs to me that Ford has taken a different course on the P/I cars to allow installation of those sub-systems. Which, for those of us who have been in the business, understand their importance.

Side note - Any of you guys who are driving these Police Interceptors, please see the post from a law enforcement officer questioning why the instrument panel cannot be dimmed "off" to dark. RED ALERT. Gentlemen, this is a dead giveaway in a tactical, low light approach situation. I don't do what you do anymore, but I suggest you review the news footage of this maniac Dormer out in southern California. If this freak wanted to snipe you, what better way than you are lights out, engine on, parked in darkness. Except that you are well lite up by your instrument panel. Unexceptable in any officer survival course I ever went through. IF this is true, and is say If, then someone at Ford needs a phone call. And, by the way, if you are represented by a Union or Police Association, get them involved. Seriously. Dormer has taken officer safety to a new level. I don't do this anymore, but by God, I won't stand by and watch a brother (or sister) get hurt.

Be safe, gentlemen. And ladies.

Many are using LED's in the taillight assemblies for emergency warning/lighting, which most are much smaller then strobe tubes and produce less heat and use less energy.

Back to the topic, so it should be easy to swap Taurus tail lamps to the PI Sedan or will that mess with the LCM?

Take a look at the Feniex Cannon. It's a LED strobe that will act like a normal bulb when not activated.

Basically, I am using them as reverse lights in my SHO and when I activate them - they are red or blue.

Ghostrider, see if you can get a picture of the wiring connector. If it's different from your P/I to a civilian car, my guess is trouble in river city.

Glad to photo mine to help out.

Greg,
I dont have a Police Interceptor Sedan yet, hopefully in the future. For some reason, I am thinking Ford made things different to be difficult. Could you snap a pic? Just something I thought would look cool, neat and more modern. I know the Interceptor Utility has LED's around the tails like its retail Explorer. No biggie.

You can install the 2013 led factory lights in a 2010. All wiring and plugs are the same. but you half to change the trunk lid also and install a resistor to each left and right turn signal to slow the flasher time

Ghostriyder - send me a p/m .

Will photo rear light connectors.

I am not certain about Ford and their Police Interceptor installs..............been out of the business along time, however, this is a "must win" for Ford and they know that. If there is a strategy behind the light modules, it is well thought out - at the engineering level. at the end user level,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,well, sometimes, not so much.

Shoot me that p/m son. I'll help to the extent I can.

When you say the trunk lid, do you mean the entire trunk lid or the bezel around the lights? The 13 LED's look very nice and would love to install them on my 2011 limited! Thanks....
