2013 Police Interceptor Dash Lights (unable to black out)

Post by Glennc6 » Mon Feb 11, 2013 1:03 pm

Has anyone figured out a way to make the dash (gauges, etc) lights to go completely out? If I attempt to black out at night, I have to cover the lights with something or I am blinded even with the lights dimmed to the lowest setting.

I think IT Guy is right, not doable.

Ford Engineering would probably like to know about this sooner rather than later. That's pretty important stuff for front line law enforcement.

That could give you away easy in a tactical situation.

Ya know they probably can't turn off legally. In the old days you used to be able to but now they probably have to be at a certain brightness for legal purposes.

If you are driving a Police version of the car, try asking Ford directly about that through your fleet rep. Obviously you have a good case for why a Police version of the car would need such a feature!

Ok, so I asked a local LEO…the unofficial answer is they installed a small toggle switch in series with the dimmer rheostat wire and located it under the dash. In the off positon all the normaly dimmed dash lights simply go off when they flip the switch.

I have no clue on the warranty implications but the “fix” seemed pretty obvious.

You might want to check with your Ford Dealer Techs. :)

Just my two cents. This is bull fudge. ANY vehicle designed for front line law enforcement use has to be able to "black out." In a front line tactical situation any else makes a target out of officer/deputy sheriff. if Ford wants to get serious about this car, they need to fix this post haste. If there is some federal regulation that prohibits it, then I say let's call Joe Biden.

Good fix at the local level, however. Somebody has their thinking cap on - fix it fast so the line guys are safer.

Clearly the Police Advisory Board was not thinking here. Much like they werent thinking when they added HID headlights so you cant "wig-wag" them. I know a company thats made a bypass that works so you CAN flash the headlights

Its currently a 2-piece unit, but a 1-piece unit is in the works.

The interceptors do not have HID headlamps. They are standard halogen but are projection headlamps which is why they can not wig wag. There is a single filament headlamp bulb and the headlamp assembly contains a shutter the allows more light out for highbeams. It is a mechanical system and would prematurely wear out if made to wig wag. The system you refer to is for daytime use only.

Ford could more than likely could add the dark out option by doing a calibration update for the IP. Much like adding they did for adding the digital speedometer. Of course that means a dealer visit and $$ for hooking up the computer.

What digital speedometer? Is for the PI cars only or could we get it put into our civilian models?

I'd pay for that.

The upgrade is done via IDS or Ford Module Programmer and a VCM or comparable device. My guess is it is locked to police vehicles but who knows. You would def. need the same instrument cluster as the police model.

Might work never know. Could try to trick it. But again must be the same style IC. Its fun to try things that are not supposed to work, lol.

You have to enable the Dark Car feature using forscan then you can turn off your dash lights.
