Police Rims on a Limited?

Post by GhostRider » Wed Nov 27, 2013 10:40 pm

Are the police rims a direct bolt-on to the retail Taurus?

Also, would my Limited be negatively affected by going from 19" to 18"?

The rim should fit on fine. What tires were you planning to use on the 18 inch rim? The PI uses a different tire size than the civilian Taurus so if you use the police tire size it might throw off your speedometer a very small amount... but if you use the tire size for the SEL with 18 inch wheels you should be fine.

The police rim will only take 245-55-18 so thats what I was planning on.

Besides the speedometer issue (which I am told the dealership can fix), what about handling, etc?

What else are you looking for? Handling has a lot to do with tire brand choice. I can tell u that my awd squad runs dedicated snow tires in the winter and it can go pretty much anywhere even in show deeper than the frame height of the car.

As long as the tires are the same outside diameter you should not have to have anything changed and the speedometer will read accurate.

I am not exactly sure, but the difference in tire size you are seeing could simply be because that tire is getting placed on a different wheel. The outside diameter can possibly be exactly the same, it's just that the tire has a different sidewall width since it is placed on a smaller diameter wheel. (More sidewall, in other words, since the civilian wheels are 1" larger)

I am not exactly sure, though. That is how it was for the Crown Victoria, at least. Some civilian cars had 16", 17", and 18" wheels while the police used 17" wheels for the last 6 years of production (16" previously)

In all cases, the outside diameter of the tires on all was exactly the same. They just used different sized tires to accommodate the various wheel diameters.

The Utility seems to be kicking the Sedans a$#. I know some agencies that went to the Utility after they were kind of disappointed in the Sedan

I drove a 2012 Taurus last week and was rather disappointed in the visibility, especially towards the rear.
