Headlight bulbs upgrade? 2014 PI Sedan

Post by PFFCO » Sun Feb 24, 2019 9:04 am

Has anyone upgraded their headlight bulbs? I noticed that my headlights are not as bright as I would expect the to be and figured maybe I need to upgrade the bulbs. I don't think it's a low voltage issue, everything else seems ok, the Highbeams are very bright.

Any suggestions on what bulbs to use? This is a 2014 PI Sedan.

Hi,

The halogen bulbs in the 2013+ PI pretty much suck (as you have noticed). There are a couple of options. One is an HIR2 +30 Bulb. It's a GM(!) part# 23342527. That actual bulb is a VOSLA part# 28432, Made in Germany. I used these for about a year, then decided to upgrade to a HID bulb.

The other is a HID upgrade. I went with the diode dynamics 9012 kit (based on previous experience with them), 2 year warranty, install took about 45 minutes plug and play. Best $150 I ever spent.

Thanks for this info. Is this the kit that you have?

The color choice is nice. I think 5000K would yield a brighter light.

That's the one. I went with the 4300K, I've tried other colors on previous vehicles, but for me, that range seems to work best.

Have any pictures? I was thinking of going HID but past experience was horrible, but that was in a non projector headlights ... I want to convert to SHO HID but the cost is crazy

Dk,

Sorry, I don't have any pics. I can tell you that while the VOLSA +30 halogen bulbs were a vast improvement over stock, the HID's were literally night and day if that helps. If you have some time to wait, I think DD had either a black Friday or Christmas deal last year that dropped the price down from $150.

I put these LEDs in. https://www.ddmtuning.com/Products/Sabe ... 006-LED-PR Way better than stock, but you can tell they're not as good as in reflector lenses.
I ordered their Ultra HIDs because they claim they'll be better in the projectors. I have their HIDs or LEDs in all my other vehicles.

I went and bought the Diode Dynamics bulbs. Question, is there only one bulb in these cars? Looking at it, I thought it was a single bulb, not like some where there is a low and high beam bulb combined. I opened the kit but the weather has been cold up until recently, so now I can attack the install. It does look like you have to move a few things out of the way for the install. I drove the car the other day at night and those stock bulbs suck.

Correct - there is only a single bulb per side. High beam is controlled with a shutter in the headlight assembly - The clunking sound you hear when you enable the high beams is the shutter operating.

IIRC, I did have to take out the airbox to get to the driver side lamp.

Thanks. I was thinking it was something like that, I do hear the clunk when the car is off, my wife's camaro makes the same noise. I have a ton of front end work to do, taking off the bumper cap is next,so I'll put the bulbs in then. Can't wait to see at night again.

Update, Going nuts here. I bought the Diode Dynamics kit, for the 2014 PI. Got the first bulb installed near the cold air intake, and then went for the second. Both were no fun... So the first one works great. The second bulb near the washer fluid does not work. I called Diode Dynamics, and they shipped me new ballasts and bulbs.

I was all excited and put them immediately. Same deal, no working light. But if I plug in the original bulb to the factory harness, it works fine.

I do not have an external relay, but I'm thinking it would be the same 12 volts as the battery regardless.

I called them back, they by the way are awesome to deal with. They sent me a relay harness that I will try but I'm expecting it to do the exact same thing. Klrsmith, did you use an external relay? I just can't figure out for the life of me why I can't get two running bulbs. The one that works, looks great, but I'm stuck. I can't see anything else preventing this from working, like a wig-wag, etc. It's just the factory harness.

Hey PFFCO,

Yes - I did buy the harness, as they told me if I didn't need it I could return it. Factory harness to the new harness and that to the bulbs and ballasts. It was all pretty much plug and play (although there was some heat shrink tubing over the harness connections). I did (at a later time) buy the auto headlight switch and forscan in the auto headlight feature - that is also working like a champ!

Agree that DD is awesome to deal with - had an issue on another vehicle (Truck) and they overnighted me a new ballast that resolved the issue. Let us know what happens with the additional harness...

Thanks. I'm hoping it's something funky, where there might not be enough amperage to run the second ballast. If I was really into pain, I'd remove the first one, and then try the second one and see if it works. I'll report back. They are shipping it out today, I'll probably get it by the weekend. They have been great to deal with.

If I recall correctly, one side of the new harness plugs into the driver side factory harness, the other side doesn't plug into anything but the bulb and ballast... The instruction sheet with the harness is very easy to follow. You'll love the output when you get this installed. :-)

Look on Ebay for lasfit 9012 LED kit. It's like $55 and very bright. They are also adjustable to get the right angle for maximum light through the projector.

So - PFFCO...

Did the harness work?

I installed the harness that came. Plugged it into the drivers side bulb wire and wires the +/- to the battery. Ran the passenger side wire for the harness over and it plugs directly into the new bulb. Turned on the headlights and WHAM! I now have both lights. Bulbs are really bright. Highs are really really bright. I’m happy. Thanks for reminding me to post.
