2007 Five Hundred noise after strut replacement

Post by Desertguyy » Thu Dec 12, 2019 12:45 am

Hello all, New member here.

I need some advice. I have a 2007 Five Hundred SEL FWD with 109K miles on it. I was getting a noise from the front right when turning the wheel while at very low speeds or standing still. It was time for new struts so I got 4 KYB struts for it. Now, I am an experienced wrench turner, but the fronts looked tough to do. So, a friend of a friend who is a retired Ford mechanic offered to install all four struts for $200, i jumped on it. For that money, not even worth getting my hands dirty.

Well, after the installation, the noise is back. Its more of a bong noise that sounds like the spring is catching in the mount when turning. The mechanic dude originally told me the strut mounts were fine and could be reused. Any ideas on anything else that could be the culprit? Its not a knocking noise or anything that might be considered a tie rod end or a stabilizer bar mount.

I also assume the strut has to be completely removed from the car to replace the upper mount. Not a job I am looking forward to as I am not as young as I used to be. If you all think the strut mount is my best option, I welcome any pointers to make this job a little easier. I have pulled and rebuilt engines in my younger years, and do most of my repairs myself, so, while not a pro, I do know my way around a toolbox. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like the upper strut mount/bearing is trash now to me. I think you need to replace it.

Yep...whole thing comes out...spring is compressed...top nut is removed...new upper strut mount/bearing installed...nut reinstalled...spring is uncompressed...whole thing goes back in. I recently replaced the front struts on my 500. Really not that big of a deal.

Thanks for that, video makes it look easy. I have a hard time believing that the axle nut comes off that easy, but we'll see.

Axle nut removal was very easy for me with a long breaker bar. Det get one for this if you don't already have one.
