Exhaust Upgrade

Post by Antonio LaMontoya » Sat Sep 06, 2008 8:56 pm

I'm interested in hearing anyone's experiences regarding exhaust system upgrades. Looking at the 500's tailpipe, it seems awful restrictive. And, I sure haven't got anywhere close to the 29 hwy. mpg that we're supposed to get. I drove from San Diego to Yuma, on cruise control all they way, and got about 24 mpg. That was with a K&N filter installed as well.

Thanks,
Antonio

Well, personally I think there's something amiss with your car more than just a "restrictive" exhaust. Sitting with the cruise on about 75 in my AWD montego with only about 4500 on the odometer, I can register 28.5 mpg. Now, if you're reading includes start and stop and things like that, the CVT isn't a friend of MPG in that sort of situation - but while cruising - if you're really only getting 24 - that's not right.

I'm sure there's someone who'll fabricate something less restrictive (and also louder) than the factory setup - it's only a matter of money!

All that uphill coming out of San Diego is terrible for gas mileage. 24 doesn't really sound that bad.

For exhaust, Ford made a dual exhaust system for the Duratec used on many Tauri and Sables in the '96-'00 time frame. It may be possible to adapt one of those systems to work, but your best bet will probably be to just replace the pipe behind the cats with a custom dual setup or a larger single pipe.

So, has no one done an exhaust upgrade on their 500? I was really hoping to hear some good/bad experiences. The MPG on my last tank - a shade under 20.5 - and that was mostly freeway (that was my computation, not the dash display.)

What really looks restrictive in the exhaust is the 3 stooges plumbing from the exhaust manifolds to the cat.

I actually upgraded my exhaust a couple months after I got the car. I went to a muffler shop and asked them to attach a muffler off a mustang GT in place of the stock muffler. Nice quiet pur at idle and a nice sound on takeoff. The sound is just stock on the inside and is gone at cruising. Check out my pics

just had stainless exhaust tips installed, I was going to have the muffler gutted, it was suggested that I remove the front resonator as a starting point , results: nice idle-- sounds a lot better, not loud no codes or drone, more hp ?? = sweet
