500 has better looking in the front, especially, Limited edition. montego has better looking in the rear light. (this is only my personal opinion).

Here is a question? Has anyone change the rear light in their 500 using Mercury Montego? Can it fit well?

If I bought a Montego (which I might) I would want to know if you can install 500 rear lights.

You don't WANT the LED's? Which are very unlikely to ever burn out? Which use far less power and light up more quickly (and thus may prevent some accidents?)

If that IS the case, I bet you could sell those Mercury lights really quick on EBay..they are not cheap, that's for sure...

I have a 95 Astrovan with 133,000 miles on it. I may have replaced 2 bulbs in all that time. I don't think I like the way they look during the day, and just the other night I happened to be behind one. I thought the brake lights were very glarey and the look of all those littel bulbs at light was ugly. Of course I wouldn't have to look at them while I'm driving. :P

On another note, I sure love the two tone interiors in those Montegos.

I don't like being behind a car with LED lights...Too darn bright. They need to tone those things down.

Okay, a couple more differences...

Post by Avanti » Wed Dec 07, 2005 3:58 am

More for 2006 models:
- Montego has no bodyside moldings - being phased in, apparently;
- Montego has molded mudguards front and rear - also being phased in;
- Montego has body-color rocker panel molding.

Me too. Let us know what you find out. I found these at the Merc site:
http://tinyurl.com/cnvpq
and these (they seem to be new!) at the Ford site:
http://tinyurl.com/axjvp

Anyone try either of these?

PS: I have my 500 in for the strap recall and asked the Service Mgr about the mudflap TSB/or "fix" and he didn't know anything about it. I'll check with parts on the mudflaps when I pick up my car.

Nice try but they are not molded as on the 2006 Montego.

Well, the 2006 may be molded...

Post by Avanti » Sat Dec 10, 2005 2:37 am

I guess until we can see what the 2006's mudguards look like, we won't know. If you look carefully at the Mercury website, they sure look molded. But, who knows? If they came on stream in October as originally scheduled, the revised 2006 Montegos should be on the lots any day...

Yes the anti-theft system is called"pats" but i dont see what you mean by its standard on just the mercury. Its standard on every ford vehicle since 2000 If you dont have the factory passive anti-theft system then you better go to the dealership right away cause its for sure supposed to be there.

Also "no low fuel warning" what? thats crazy no car i have been in has not had one of those. Now you may be confused with the message center for the five hundred if you have the sel and limited you have the message center and it will display "low fuel level" when the tank gets low but will also display warning messages if there is something is wrong with the car such as (check engine temp, service brake system) But if you dont have the message center you still get a low fuel light that will come on.. Also there is no Warning tone that sounds when you have low fuel?? or is there? According to the manual there is a single chime that will sound to let you know of the problem..

I've not seen a low fuel warning other than the message on the message center. Nor have I heard any chime. At the time my message display center displayed that I had 36 miles to empty. I won't say it doesn't have a chime or a low fuel light but I haven't seen it. And I have seen the Low Fuel message.

Montego changes for '06

Post by PMCErnie » Mon Jan 02, 2006 5:59 am

I was really surprised to visit the Mercury site today and see the '06 Monte with mud flaps and no side moldings. I was at a Merc dealer two weeks ago and the Monte's there had no such changes.

Angel is right. On the SEL and Limiteds, at least, there is NO low fuel warning light or chime. And the message center doesn't even come on until you are virtually out of fuel...a 40 mile warning isn't much of one, especially when you consider it may, over time, become less than spot-on accurate.

One of the Five Hundreds I test drove had a low fuel warning light. I drove enough that I have forgotten what trim level it was.

I am looking at the 2005 Quick Reference Guide for the Five Hundred and it specifically does not show the low fuel warning light. The owners manual lists it as "(if equipped)". It is located just right of the check engine light.

I am still on the first tank so I don't know about mine.

I usually keep my display to the setting where it shows me "X miles to Empty." I guess I don't MISS a low fuel warning {Other than the display} because I've never had a vehicle equipped with one. With the Harley I have to keep track of how many miles it's been since my last fill up. The Sportsters don't even come equipped with a fuel gauge. I figure the gas gauge itself is my idicator of low fuel.
