07 3.0 liter good engine or bad

Post by kurt k » Sun Jan 25, 2009 6:24 pm

I just purchased an 07 500 SEL. It was a rental car before. It has 26,000 miles. I paid $10,000 for it. Can anyone tell me if this is a good engine or not and what to look for if something is bad. It has a 6 speed transmission. Is this dependable I already Know that the rear breaks are bad although it is in excellent condition. Should I sell this car or keep it for long term use. Can I get 150 thousand miles out of it.

kurt -- I read these posts all the time, and I don't see the engine being a problem. Obviously you should follow the maintenance schedule.

At $10,000 and 26,000 miles for an 07 I think you got a pretty good deal. There is an 05 advertised here locally with 105,000 miles and they are asking $12,000.

In all the vehicles we've had, the 3.0L has been bullet proof (knock on my old 2005's metal cover and then your 2007's likely plastic cover). Change that trans fluid much earlier than specified in the maintenance guide, however, as nettysmontego will attest, that interval is way too long.

And so do I. Change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles. The engine is good.

I think the 3.0L engine is awesome... never a problem at all!

My 07 had 74,000 miles when i bought it in October 08 for $12, 500. Great car!

Kind of late to ask this question after you've purchased it, no?

3.0L Duratec is a great motor. As everyone else has echoed here, proper maintenance will ensure a long life with no problems.

My Five Hundred replaced a car that I put 291,000 miles on. Original Engine and Transmission.

I bought a Five Hundred SEL AWD with 55K for 8,000 + TTL, and after I ran the OASIS, found that it had a 100,000 mile ESP "PremiumCare" warranty, that I transferred for $50 bucks.

Keep the vehicle maintained and she'll serve you well.

I concur. The 3.0l is a tested and proven engine. Ford has used this engine for a couple decades, constantly tweaking and improving it. I put 36k miles on it before my leased ended and not one engine problem. Aside from it's lack of power as compared to the newer 3.5l, it should give you years of hassle free service.

Good engine? How do you answer that?
Reliable.......yes
Power.........Good
Gas Mileage...good
Use oil........good
long life.......yes
quiet...........No
smooth........No
The 4 cylinder in my wifes 99 Accord is smother and quieter.

Over all it is a good engine, not great. Other engines have more power, better gas mileage and are reliable.

Good engine, or bad?

Think of it this way: It's your engine.

Mine is pretty good so far with 42,000 miles. I recommend that changing transmission oils at 30,000 miles maintenace, esp for a rental car. Rear brakes are cover under warranty.

It been quoted from various sources that the 3.0L in the 500 is a bored out version of the 2.5L (Mondeo class, later to become Duratec) which the primary engineering input came from Porsche, who were developing a similar V6 before selling the engineering to Ford, and Cosworth, who helped with cylinder head manufacturing.

Not a bad heritage if I say so.
